With most customers, I accept purchase orders and then invoice against purchase orders with a Net30 payment terms. For those whose identities match too well against Bayesian Prior Estimates in a locally developed model, payment in advance may be required.

I also make use of the "retainer" model for consulting services, which allows for regular (monthly, quarterly, annual) payments that include a minimum number of hours per month and grant a significant discount on the purchase of additional hours.
